Wasim Akram Names Toughest Batter and Top Five Cricketers

Former Pakistan captain and renowned fast bowler Wasim Akram has identified the most challenging batter he ever faced and revealed his personal top five cricketers from his playing days.

During an appearance on the Stick to Cricket podcast alongside English cricket figures Michael Vaughan, Sir Alastair Cook, David Lloyd, and Phil Tufnell, Akram reminisced about the defining moments of his illustrious 17-year career.

When prompted to name the best batter he bowled to, the celebrated 59-year-old chose West Indies icon Sir Vivian Richards.

“People often inquire about the best batsman I’ve bowled against. For me, it undoubtedly has to be Sir Vivian Richards. It wasn’t solely his batting prowess; it encompassed his entire persona and the charisma he exuded,” Akram explained.

He further mentioned that he competed against numerous other outstanding players, including Allan Border, Graham Gooch, Sachin Tendulkar, and Brian Lara.

“Sir Viv was nearing the end of his career around 1987–88, but he was an exceptional character—a hero to everyone,” Akram noted.

The iconic left-arm pacer then shared his list of the five best cricketers he encountered throughout his career.

“My top pick has to be Imran Khan, because of his contributions to Pakistan. Following him are Viv Richards, Martin Crowe, Brian Lara, and Sachin Tendulkar,” he revealed.

Akram also recounted some of the most difficult matches he experienced, specifically highlighting Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist in ODIs.

“I rarely played against the great Ricky Ponting, but in ODIs, Adam Gilchrist was particularly challenging for me,” he admitted.

When asked about his favorite countries to play cricket in, Akram selected England and Australia.

“It’s difficult to choose just one. England holds a special place because of its extensive history, top-notch facilities, deep understanding of the game, and convenient travel. And then, there’s Australia,” he said.

“I recall touring there in 1989 after my initial year with Lancashire, and Imran [Khan] advised me, ‘If you succeed against Australia in their home conditions, you’ll gain immediate recognition.’ And that’s precisely what transpired,” Akram concluded.
