Gyokeres Seeks His Own Path at Arsenal, Shuns Henry Comparisons
Arsenal’s new Swedish striker, Viktor Gyokeres, addressed the media on Wednesday, clarifying that he aims to forge his own legacy at the club and doesn’t want to be compared to Thierry Henry, despite inheriting the iconic number 14 jersey.
The prolific Sweden international, who tallied an impressive 54 goals across all competitions last season, finalized his transfer from Sporting on Saturday for a reported 63.5 million euros ($72.56 million).
Gyokeres willingly took on the number 14 shirt, famously worn by Arsenal legend Henry. The number was available and holds significant historical weight for the club.
Speaking to the media, Gyokeres acknowledged the history associated with the shirt but stated that his selection was primarily due to its availability. He emphasized that he intends to carve out his own path and not be defined by comparisons to Henry’s achievements.
Number Availability Influenced Choice
“I am aware of the history surrounding the number. In truth, there were limited options available when it came to selecting a jersey number,” Gyokeres explained.
“Given its availability, choosing the number 14 was a straightforward decision.”
He further added, “It’s not my goal to be measured against his career accomplishments, particularly at this club. My focus is on showcasing my abilities and making my own mark. He was undoubtedly a fantastic player, but our styles are different.”
After a stellar season in Portugal, the Swedish forward is anticipated to bolster Arsenal’s attacking prowess in the upcoming Premier League season.
Arsenal is scheduled to commence their new Premier League campaign against Manchester United on August 17.
