Verstappen Reflects on Future, Acknowledges Potential Championship Drought
Max Verstappen has conceded that he may not secure another Formula One world title. However, he expressed his desire to continue racing for a few more years, according to recent reports from international media outlets.
The current season has presented challenges for the reigning F1 champion. He currently holds the third position in the driver standings with 205 points. The McLaren team’s Oscar Piastri (309 points) and Lando Norris (275) are leading the race.
Based on current performance, it seems Piastri or Norris could potentially end Verstappen’s streak of four consecutive championships.
The Dutch racer’s contract with Red Bull concludes in 2028, and he has previously stated his intention to avoid an extended racing career.
Uncertainty About Racing Future
In a recent interview, the 27-year-old driver mentioned that he remains unsure about the duration of his racing career.
He also acknowledged the possibility that he may not achieve a fifth world championship.
“I probably won’t continue until I’m 44,” Verstappen stated.
“I believe this has surpassed my wildest dreams from the past. I am incredibly pleased and proud of my accomplishments thus far. While there’s a chance I might not win another championship, it doesn’t weigh heavily on my mind.”
Potential Managerial Role
Looking at his future prospects, Verstappen suggested that he might transition into a management role within the sport.
“I have numerous plans connected to racing that don’t necessarily require my complete involvement in the future,” the Dutch driver explained.
“However, it’s crucial to establish a strong foundation in the beginning. These plans are for the long term.”
“I would like to continue driving a bit after F1, but I’m also interested in the management aspect, where I can observe other drivers competing in your car and team.”
The driver added that he cannot provide a definitive answer on retirement now, as the decision will hinge on his sustained passion for racing and any decline in his performance.
“It’s challenging to provide a comprehensive answer at this moment,” he added.
“It depends on my enjoyment and my speed. Eventually, age will slow you down, and it might be preferable to give opportunities to younger drivers, as you don’t want to appear incompetent!”
