Usama Mir Could Play as Local in England from 2027

Pakistani leg-spinner Usama Mir has signaled his willingness to play for England on the international stage if the opportunity arises, emphasizing that a cricketer’s primary role is to play the game.

Mir, having inked a three-year T20 deal with Worcestershire County Cricket Club, is set to be considered a local player starting in the 2027 England domestic season.

The club has characterized this decision as integral to their ‘long-term strategic planning’.

According to the club’s statement, Mir will initially be counted within the team’s overseas player quota for the first year. However, he will be eligible as a local player in the subsequent two years, aligning with residency regulations.

This upcoming status adjustment for Mir could potentially pave the way for a call-up to the England men’s cricket team.

During an interview, the 29-year-old was directly questioned about his stance on this possibility.

Mir acknowledged the timeline required to qualify as a local player but conveyed his readiness to accept any offer to participate in international cricket elsewhere.

Mir stated, “This is far off; I’m not really aware of the details. I believe there’s a duration needed to be internationally eligible, so I’m unsure of the exact situation.”

He further added, “Should I receive an opportunity to play international cricket in another country, I would definitely consider it, as a cricketer’s job is to play cricket. Given the chance to compete at the highest level, I would embrace it.”

Nevertheless, Usama Mir restated that playing for Pakistan remains his ultimate ambition. However, he expressed frustration at being consistently overlooked, stating that he cannot remain confined to domestic cricket while awaiting opportunities.

Mir explained, “It is undoubtedly a dream to represent your nation and continue doing so. However, I don’t understand my exclusion from consideration. I must also consider my own well-being and my family’s needs.”

“I refuse to be stagnant, merely participating in domestic cricket and waiting indefinitely without assurance or stability.”

“Conversely, if I am presented with chances to play and perform well – with hopes of playing in county leagues and other leagues too – I should take advantage of these prospects.”
