Sinner Rehires Fitness Coach Ferrara Ahead of U.S. Open
LONDON: Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player and current Wimbledon titleholder, has formally rehired Umberto Ferrara, his former fitness coach. This decision comes as Sinner gears up for the Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open, as confirmed by the Italian athlete on Wednesday.
Sinner had previously concluded his collaborations with both Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi the prior year, following the probe into his positive drug test result for clostebol.
Sinner’s team communicated via a statement their choice to proceed with preparations for the imminent Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open with Ferrara.
The team underscored Ferrara’s considerable background and his significant contribution to Sinner’s advancement.
“This determination aligns seamlessly with Jannik’s management staff, forming a crucial element of the continuous groundwork for forthcoming competitions, notably the Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open,” Sinner’s representatives stated.
“Umberto has been instrumental in Jannik’s evolution thus far. His comeback underscores a renewed dedication to upholding consistency and top-tier performance.”
Earlier in the year, the Italian player returned to action following a three-month suspension, which concluded after reaching an accord with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
The source of the prohibited substance was identified as a spray utilized by physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi, which he had acquired from Ferrara.
During the U.S. Open the previous year, Sinner voiced his uncertainties about continuing his partnership with Ferrara, citing substantial challenges and a need for a fresh start.
“Given these errors, I lack confidence in continuing alongside them. I’ve encountered numerous difficulties recently and was awaiting the outcome. At present, I simply require a clean slate,” he remarked.
Ferrara, who attributed the incident to Naldi, has recently collaborated with fellow Italian player Matteo Berrettini.
