Akmal Claims Zulqarnain Reverted to Old Behavior Despite His Support
KARACHI: Pakistani Test cricketer Umar Akmal has voiced his disappointment, alleging that Zulqarnain Haider resumed his previous conduct even after recovering from a serious illness.
During an appearance on a local television program, the middle-order batsman stated that he opted not to pursue legal action against the former wicketkeeper, taking into account his financial difficulties.
Akmal also recounted being among the first to visit Zulqarnain when he was severely ill, in addition to providing monetary assistance.
He asserted that, despite his benevolent actions, Zulqarnain has persisted in the same pattern of behavior, though he emphasized that he harbors no ill will towards anyone.
“I hold no animosity towards anyone. I could have pursued legal recourse, but I chose not to, being mindful of his economic circumstances,” Akmal stated.
“However, I chose to overlook it, and as a fellow cricketer and a junior, I was the first to offer support during his time of need. My wife was instrumental in encouraging me to take that initiative.
“Recently, following his recovery, he has unfortunately reverted to his former ways, which I believe reflects on his character. Nevertheless, I will maintain a positive outlook.”
To provide context, Umar Akmal put aside past disagreements to visit Zulqarnain at his home in 2022 when he was unwell, despite the latter’s prior accusations of sabotaging his career.
It’s worth noting that Zulqarnain’s cricketing career was marred by controversy after his abrupt departure from the national team during the 2010 Dubai tour. Although he later returned to domestic cricket, he was unable to secure a place in the national squad again.
