Verstappen to Remain with Red Bull in 2026
Following clarifications regarding Max Verstappen’s future, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has affirmed that George Russell will continue with their team, according to recent reports from international media.
Verstappen has put an end to speculations about his future by confirming his commitment to Red Bull in 2026, as announced prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Mercedes and Wolff had considered acquiring the four-time world champion, leading to discussions about Russell’s position, whose contract extension was pending as the season neared its conclusion.
Wolff acknowledged that conversations were held with Max Verstappen amid the uncertainty surrounding his future. With the situation resolved, Russell’s place at Mercedes is now secure.
Wolff stated, “I’ve consistently expressed my satisfaction with my team, including Russell and Kimi Antonelli. However, the ambiguity surrounding Max’s future prompted discussions with him as well.”
He further added, “I’ve always been transparent with George, indicating that he was 90% likely to remain with us, but it was necessary to engage with Verstappen. Now that the situation is settled, we can proceed as planned.”
Russell has delivered strong performances this season despite Mercedes’ inconsistent vehicle, securing his sixth podium finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He is also leading the team, especially after Lewis Hamilton’s shift to Ferrari, alongside Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli, who is 18 years old.
Toto Wolff is optimistic about his team’s improvements and anticipates a future rivalry between Ferrari and Mercedes.
Wolff concluded, “The prospect of Ferrari competing against Mercedes is thrilling. I am confident that this rivalry will materialize, whether next year or in the years ahead. We anticipate this competition, and it promises to be spectacular.”
