Tommy Paul Advances to French Open Third Round After Comeback Win

PARIS: In a thrilling match at Roland Garros on Wednesday, Tommy Paul fought back from a two-set deficit to defeat Marton Fucsovics with a final score of 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, securing his place in the French Open’s third round.

Fucsovics began strongly, capitalizing on Paul’s apparent abdominal discomfort to claim the initial two sets and reach a 5-3 lead in the fourth. However, he faltered, ultimately allowing Paul to seize the victory.

The American tennis player shared that his strategy was centered on prolonging the match and maintaining his resolve.

“My focus was solely on extending points, extending games, and extending the overall duration of the match,” Paul stated.

“I wasn’t ready to leave just yet. I felt I had more to accomplish at Roland Garros,” he further commented.

Paul is scheduled to compete against Russian player Karen Khachanov next. He affirmed that his physical discomfort would not prevent him from participating in the upcoming match.

“I intend to be back on the court. I am committed to playing, without a doubt. My intention is to compete with the goal of winning,” Paul concluded.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Suffers Upset Defeat

In a surprising turn of events, Stefanos Tsitsipas was defeated by Italy’s Matteo Gigante in their second-round match, with Gigante winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

The 23-year-old Gigante has now beaten a top 20 ranked player and progressed to the third round of a tour-level competition for the first time.

This defeat marks Tsitsipas’s earliest exit from the French Open since 2018. The Greek player, ranked number 20, previously enjoyed success at the tournament, reaching the final in 2021 and the semi-finals in prior years.
