Southee’s Day-Rate Agreement with ECB Offers Flexibility But Could Hinder England During Franchise Matches
LONDON: Reports indicate that Tim Southee, England’s specialist skills mentor, is scheduled to depart from the squad in the middle of the Ashes 2025-26 series to participate in the International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE.
According to reports, the former New Zealand bowler, who became part of England’s coaching staff in May 2025, will leave after the initial Test match. Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is anticipated to take over the position.
The Ashes series, commencing on November 21 in Perth, poses a significant hurdle for England. Southee, having retired from international play for New Zealand, continues his involvement in worldwide franchise leagues.
His arrangement with the ECB operates on a daily compensation basis, akin to James Anderson’s brief tenure as a bowling consultant. While this setup grants Southee flexibility, it also makes England susceptible to his absence when franchise tournaments overlap.
The ILT20, beginning on December 4, directly conflicts with the Ashes schedule. Southee will be available solely for the first Test before departing for the UAE.
“It has probably come about a bit faster than I anticipated. Cricket is a game I cherish, and it has enriched my life significantly. If I can contribute and assist others in enjoying the sport as much as I have, I hope that opportunity arises,” Southee stated.
England may find reassurance in the fact that Andrew Flintoff, who possesses experience coaching the England Lions and presently manages the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, is the frontrunner to succeed Southee.
Furthermore, Flintoff will be present in Australia during the Ashes as part of the Lions’ tour, ensuring stability in the coaching structure.
