Shehzad Addresses Social Media Speculation Regarding Babar Azam’s Return

Pakistani Test cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has refuted the increasing conjecture circulating on social media concerning star batsman Babar Azam potentially rejoining the T20I team for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025, particularly following Fakhar Zaman’s injury.

In a statement made on his YouTube platform, Shehzad shared his apprehension about the proliferation of unconfirmed reports across various social media channels.

“Since Fakhar Zaman sustained an injury, there’s been widespread speculation regarding Babar Azam’s comeback. These are merely conjectures,” Shehzad stated.

“Such narratives are disseminated through designated WhatsApp groups and social media profiles compensated for these activities. These avenues are used to cultivate a specific atmosphere, which then rapidly spreads across social media,” he elaborated.

The right-handed batter also questioned the reasoning behind these stories and criticized the timing of the rumors.

“It’s unusual to see discussions about Babar Azam’s return starting so soon after a player’s injury,” he observed.

Shehzad, aged 33, referenced a parallel occurrence during Pakistan’s T20I series against the West Indies, which the national side won 2-1.

“Similar talks emerged before, suggesting Babar Azam was being considered for the T20 series against the West Indies. However, according to reports, Babar selflessly withdrew his name to provide opportunities to younger players,” he recounted.

He further scrutinized the authenticity of these accounts, criticizing the way Babar is depicted in the media.

“These identical posts are being circulated across multiple platforms. When has Babar Azam ever declined to give opportunities to young talents?” he questioned.

“How many young players were given opportunities during his captaincy? Can anyone specify how many domestic performers received support under Babar’s leadership?” he inquired.

Shehzad wrapped up his remarks by reflecting on Babar’s treatment of domestic talent throughout his leadership.

“Even when media pressure intensified, and domestic players struggled to secure a spot in the squad, Babar Azam still didn’t grant them opportunities to play,” he concluded.

These comments come amidst growing media coverage connecting the former captain to a possible return to Pakistan’s T20I setup.

Speculation heightened after the left-handed batter suffered a hamstring injury during the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies, sidelining him from both the final T20I and ODI portions of the Caribbean tour.

With the tri-nation series and the Asia Cup 2025 drawing closer, Fakhar’s participation remains uncertain.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has directed him to report to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore for rehabilitation under the guidance of the board’s medical experts.
