Swiatek Set to Clash with Shnaider in Next Round
MADRID: Iga Swiatek continued her strong performance at the Madrid Open, triumphing over Linda Noskova with a score of 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32 held at Park Manzanares on Saturday. This victory marks Swiatek’s eighth consecutive win at the tournament.
The world number 2, who is also the defending champion from Poland, successfully avenged her previous defeat to Noskova at the 2024 Australian Open, securing her advancement into the last 16 with a dominant display.
The first set featured a tense moment at 5-4, with Noskova leading 0-30 on Swiatek’s serve.
However, the Polish player demonstrated resilience, recovering to claim the set 6-4. Despite Noskova’s efforts, she was unable to disrupt Swiatek’s composure, leading to Swiatek winning the set.
Swiatek initiated the second set by breaking Noskova’s serve and maintained control throughout, ultimately winning the set 6-2. The match lasted for a total of 1 hour and 17 minutes.
“I am satisfied with my concentration and attitude today,” Swiatek commented after her victory.
“It was challenging initially, but I am glad I remained composed, even when Linda broke my serve. Overall, it was a positive match.”
Swiatek acknowledged the competitive nature of her encounters with Noskova, emphasizing the high level of play whenever they compete.
“Each match between Noskova and myself has been highly intense and of great quality,” she stated.
“I anticipated a challenge, but I maintained my focus on my own game. We have a good understanding of each other’s playing styles, and I am pleased that I was more consistent towards the end,” she further added.
In the upcoming round, Swiatek is scheduled to compete against the 13th seed, Diana Shnaider from Russia, who achieved a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win against Anastasija Sevastova.
