Sundhage Emphasizes Fan Support for Women’s Football Advancement
BERN: Despite a 2-0 defeat against Spain in the UEFA Women’s Euro quarterfinals on Friday, Switzerland’s head coach, Pia Sundhage, conveyed her pride and optimism. She views the campaign as a possible game-changer for women’s football in Switzerland.
Spain secured their place in the semi-finals at Bern’s Wankdorf Stadium, with goals from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina ensuring their triumph.
Although evidently disappointed by the outcome, Sundhage recognized Spain’s strength and lauded her team’s dedication.
“I am disheartened to be heading home,” Sundhage admitted during the post-match press briefing.
“However, the atmosphere in the locker room and our first-half performance indicate that this is a strong team.”
Despite the setback, the Swiss squad enjoyed considerable backing throughout the competition. Over 30,000 spectators filled Wankdorf Stadium for the quarterfinal and remained long after the final whistle to applaud the players, demonstrating the rising popularity of women’s football nationwide.
Sundhage highlighted the importance of the fans’ support and the increased visibility that the tournament provided for the women’s game.
“Spain are the reigning world champions. We gave it our all, and that is what is most important. I am very proud of Switzerland,” she stated.
“The number of people attending the matches has been remarkable.”
The experienced coach became emotional as she reflected on the broader implications of the tournament.
“This has been a truly special and moving experience. The fact that the fans stayed shows me that there are people in Switzerland who support women’s football, and I am very grateful for that.”
