Xhaka Transfers to Sunderland After Arsenal Exit

Granit Xhaka, the Swiss midfielder, has officially signed with Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen, a Bundesliga team, on a three-year deal. The Premier League team made the announcement on Wednesday.

Xhaka is heading back to the Premier League two years after his departure from Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen.

The 32-year-old Xhaka was with Arsenal for seven years before joining the Bundesliga. During his time there, he clinched the league title and participated in the Europa League final during his first season.

In his 99 appearances for Leverkusen, he managed to score six goals and provide nine assists.

The financial terms of the agreement were not revealed. However, reports in the English media indicate that Sunderland acquired Xhaka for £17.3 million ($23.14 million).

This transaction occurred a week after Leverkusen’s manager, Erik ten Hag, stated that the club couldn’t afford to let Xhaka leave.

Xhaka commented on his move, stating his pride in joining Sunderland.

“I’m very honored to be here. Upon discussions with the Club, I became thrilled and sensed the drive and attitude shared by everyone and the players,” Xhaka stated.

Granit Xhaka played in 225 Premier League games for Arsenal and twice won the FA Cup while playing for the North London team.

Xhaka’s transfer could be a significant setback for Leverkusen, who have already witnessed the departure of key players. Striker Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong have moved to Liverpool, while center-back Jonathan Tah has signed with Bayern Munich.

Sunderland, the newly promoted Premier League team, is scheduled to begin their season on August 16 with a home match against West Ham United.
