Southee in Contention for England Coaching Role
LONDON: Word has it that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering Tim Southee, the former New Zealand fast bowler, for a fast-bowling consultant position ahead of the approaching home season.
Reports suggest that New Zealand’s highest wicket-taker is being considered as a possible short-term solution to replace James Anderson, the former pace legend.
Anderson, who transitioned to a coaching role post his Test cricket retirement last year, won’t be available this summer due to commitments with Lancashire. He has committed to playing county cricket for a year and is currently healing from a calf injury.
His strong rapport with England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, is considered a significant advantage. The pair shared an emotional moment on the field during Southee’s farewell Test last December in Hamilton.
Should Southee be appointed, he will join McCullum and assistant coach Jeetan Patel, making him the third New Zealander within England’s coaching setup.
However, the ECB is also considering other candidates for the role.
The chosen consultant will be responsible for overseeing England’s pace attack during a demanding schedule. This schedule includes a Test match against Zimbabwe, a high-profile home series against India, and preparations for the Ashes tour in Australia.
England’s fast-bowling resources are currently strained due to various injuries. With Chris Woakes and Mark Wood both out, the team has a relatively inexperienced group of seam bowlers available.
Gus Atkinson, who has featured in just 11 Tests, is currently the most experienced pacer likely to be available. Sam Cook, recently rested from his duties with Essex at the request of the ECB, is anticipated to receive his first national call-up.
Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts are also being considered, while Jofra Archer may return to red-ball cricket with the England Lions.
Notably, the five-match Test series between England and India is scheduled to commence on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The remaining matches will be held at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
