Smith Anticipates ‘Big Challenge’ for England Batters on Australian Pitches
Australian batting maestro Steve Smith issued a cautionary message to England on Friday, looking ahead to the highly anticipated Ashes series scheduled from November 21, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
In a conversation with a British media outlet, the right-handed batsman recognized England as a formidable team, commending their dynamic style of play, particularly evident in their recent five-match series against India, which he lauded as exceptional.
Smith, however, suggested that their batsmen would encounter a significant hurdle when touring Australia for the Ashes later this year, emphasizing that the nation’s pitches have presented difficulties over the past few years.
“I followed much of the series against India, and it stood out as one of the best Test series in recent memory. The standard of cricket displayed by both sides was truly remarkable,” Smith commented.
“England currently possesses a strong team. They are clearly adopting a very attacking approach to the game.
“I believe that playing in Australia, especially for their batting lineup, will pose a considerable challenge. The surfaces have been quite demanding over the last three to four years.”
The seasoned player further conveyed his faith in Australia’s accomplished bowling attack and therefore foresees a compelling series.
“We have a highly experienced bowling unit with players who have performed at a high level for an extended period. I am eagerly anticipating the series, and I expect it to be a great contest,” Smith concluded.
Notably, the highly anticipated Ashes series is set to commence in Perth on November 21, followed by a day-night match in Brisbane.
The third Test is planned for Adelaide, with the final two matches taking place in Melbourne and Sydney, respectively.
