Shastri Pinpoints Key Moments in Test Match Shift

LONDON: Ravi Shastri, the former head coach for India, stated on Wednesday that two significant instances altered the course of the third Test at Lord’s, leading to England’s narrow 22-run triumph over India.

During his analysis on the ICC digital platform, Shastri dissected the intense battle, noting the apparent parity between the two sides for the majority of the contest.

Shastri remarked, “In my view, Rishabh Pant’s dismissal served as the pivotal moment in the Test match.”

Turning Points Highlighted

Shastri identified the first crucial juncture as Rishabh Pant’s run-out for 74 just before lunch on the third day.

“Stokes displayed remarkable awareness to aim at the correct end. If Pant had remained, India might have seized a lead and controlled the game,” Shastri commented.

Shastri also drew attention to an incident on day four when, with India at 40/1 in their second innings, Karun Nair’s dismissal after leaving a straight delivery proved costly.

“That indicated a significant lapse in focus. It was a very hittable ball, and the choice to leave it at that crucial juncture created an opportunity for England. The timing of that wicket was decisive,” he stated.

Shastri recognised India’s periods of dominance but acknowledged England’s success in capitalising on critical phases.

“Credit should be given to England. They seized the critical opportunities when the pressure mounted. They aggressively took control when they sensed a chance,” he added.

“The pitch offered little advantage. If India had lost two fewer wickets on the prior day, they might have successfully chased the target.”

Comparison to Past Victory

The former coach drew parallels between this match and India’s notable victory at Lord’s in 2021.

“It strongly echoed the 2021 match. Then, India batted first, and the scorecards appeared very similar. India emerged victorious then, but this time England did.

“The series remains undecided, and the outcome is unpredictable. India has the ability to recover, and if they do, the final Test at The Oval promises to be captivating,” he observed.

Praise for Ben Stokes

Shastri lauded Ben Stokes for his leadership qualities and resolve during the third Test.

“Stokes delivered prolonged, demanding spells on the final day. Despite his efforts in Edgbaston, he conserved energy and performed exceptionally when most needed. He bowled spells of eight, nine, and even ten overs to secure the match,” Shastri noted.

Shastri voiced optimism regarding India’s chances in the series.

“With a bit more fortune, India might have led 3–0. The competition has been gripping thus far, and the final two Tests still offer everything to play for,” he concluded.
