Gilgeous-Alexander Inks Massive Extension with Thunder

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s 2025 regular season and Finals MVP, has reportedly agreed to a substantial $285.4 million contract extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to international reports released on Tuesday.

Sources indicate that the agreement will extend through the 2030-31 season, featuring an annual salary of $71.35 million, which is the highest in NBA history.

This new agreement is Gilgeous-Alexander’s second extension since he became a member of the Thunder in 2019.

Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid holds the second-highest AAV (Average Annual Value) in the league, with $64.3 million.

The MVP of the 2025 season has impressive averages of 32.7 points, alongside 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.7 steals across 76 starts.

The celebrated three-time All-Star guard garnered the NBA Finals MVP accolade after guiding the Thunder to their inaugural championship in Oklahoma City. Throughout 23 playoff games, he averaged 29.9 points, 6.5 assists, and 5.3 rebounds.

Historically, Michael Jordan (four times), Shaquille O’Neal, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are distinguished NBA players who have secured the MVP, Finals MVP, and a scoring title in the same season.

Furthermore, the distinction of achieving both MVP and Finals MVP in the same season has been earned by Jordan (four times), LeBron James (twice), Larry Bird (twice), Tim Duncan, O’Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone, Abdul-Jabbar, and Willis Reed.

Across his career, Gilgeous-Alexander has amassed averages of 24.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 462 games (453 starts) split between the Thunder and the Los Angeles Clippers (2018-19).

The 2025 season MVP previously achieved a streak of scoring 20 or more points in 72 consecutive games, marking the fourth-longest such streak within a single season in NBA history.
