Afridi Endorses Malik’s Continued Participation in PSL Based on Performance
LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi conveyed his support on Sunday for Shoaib Malik’s potential role as a player for Quetta Gladiators in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.
Speaking with reporters, Afridi lauded Malik’s physical condition, suggesting that he should keep playing as long as his performance remains strong.
He further noted that franchise owners consider various aspects when selecting players, and having a seasoned player like Malik offers advantages to both the team and its captain.
“Malik has been actively involved in cricket, and I’ve personally observed his consistent practice. While it may not be necessary for Malik to participate in every game, he certainly warrants a spot if he maintains a high level of performance,” Afridi commented.
Drawing a parallel to Malik’s situation, Afridi mentioned his own career, stating that despite perceptions of his fitness, he has no plans to return to cricket.
“I have already exceeded my initial expectations in terms of playing time, and there is absolutely no possibility of a comeback,” he remarked playfully.
Afridi also clarified his disinterest in coaching the Pakistan men’s cricket team, preferring to focus on developing talent at the grassroots level.
“If you want my contribution, assign me to grassroots cricket where genuine development occurs,” he proposed.
“Currently, players are still learning fundamental skills upon reaching the national team, which ideally should not be the case,” he elaborated.
Additionally, Shahid Afridi expressed disapproval of Pakistan’s white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan’s public statements about his limited authority as captain, asserting that such remarks should not be shared with the media.
“Why didn’t Rizwan voice such concerns after securing victories against South Africa and Australia, and instead raised them only after experiencing defeats?” Afridi questioned.
“It is inappropriate for a leader to make such statements publicly or through the media,” he concluded.
