Tendulkar Impressed by Root’s Debut, Predicts Continued Success

Legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar shared his thoughts on Joe Root’s potential to surpass his all-time Test run-scoring record, recalling his initial impression of Root as a future ‘big player’.

Tendulkar amassed 15,921 runs across 200 Test matches before retiring in 2013. Root, displaying excellent form in the game’s longest format, is rapidly closing in on this milestone.

The former England skipper currently trails Tendulkar in Test runs, having scored 13,543 in 158 games, maintaining an impressive average of 51.29, including 39 centuries and 66 half-centuries.

While Root needs another 2,378 runs to overtake Tendulkar, cricket experts, like former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, are confident he will eventually break the record.

Tendulkar finally spoke about his early assessment of Root, who debuted against India, and his rise to second place in the all-time run-scoring charts.

Sachin Tendulkar acknowledged that exceeding 13,000 runs was a ‘remarkable achievement’, adding that Root’s ability to quickly understand the state of play and rotate strikes caught his eye during his debut.

“Surpassing 13,000 runs is truly a remarkable accomplishment, and he remains a strong force,” Tendulkar stated.

“When I first observed him in Nagpur in 2012, during his initial Test match, I remarked to my teammates that we were witnessing the future captain of England. His capacity to evaluate the pitch conditions and effectively rotate the strike particularly stood out to me. It became immediately apparent to me that he would become a significant player.”
