Russell Urges Mercedes to Aim for the Best

SPIELBERG: Mercedes driver George Russell has suggested that ongoing discussions regarding his contract renewal are being prolonged as the team considers a potential acquisition of current Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, according to multiple reports.

Russell recently secured a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, but his current contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the ongoing season.

The British driver has demonstrated strong performances in recent Grand Prix events, and he emphasized that Mercedes’ objective is to reclaim its position at the pinnacle of the sport.

Russell stated that for Mercedes to return to dominance, they must ensure they have elite drivers, exceptional engineers, and an outstanding pit crew.

What Russell Said
  • “If you’re going to be back on top you need to make sure you’ve got the best drivers, the best engineers, the best pit crew, and that’s what Mercedes are chasing,” Russell stated.

He also noted that it is standard procedure for Mercedes to engage in discussions with drivers of Verstappen’s caliber.

  • “So, it’s only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing. But from my side, if I’m performing as I’m doing, what have I got to be concerned about? There are two seats in every Formula One team.”

Verstappen is currently contracted with Red Bull Racing until 2028 and is expected to maintain a high level of performance for his team.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has previously expressed admiration for Verstappen, and rumors have persisted about a possible transfer, particularly as the Silver Arrows aim to rebuild after their period of supremacy from 2014 to 2021.

While 18-year-old Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli could potentially take Lewis Hamilton’s place, Verstappen is still viewed as a prime, long-term target.
