Rune Claims Victory Over Alcaraz in Barcelona, Inspired by Djokovic’s Strategy
BARCELONA: Holger Rune of Denmark unveiled the game plan that propelled him to a stunning victory over favorite Carlos Alcaraz at the Barcelona Open. The world number nine revealed he drew inspiration from Novak Djokovic’s prior triumph over Alcaraz at the Paris Olympics.
Rune defeated Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, preventing Alcaraz from securing his third title at the event. Despite Alcaraz’s previous wins in 2022 and 2023, the top seed appeared to struggle with an injury during the match, which Rune was able to take advantage of, securing his first title since the Bavarian Open in April of the previous year.
Rune noted that after being broken in the first set, he reflected on Djokovic’s Olympic victory over Alcaraz and sought to replicate the Serbian player’s methods.
“When I faced a break in the initial set, I reminded myself not to aim for the lines on every shot,” he stated following his win.
“I considered, ‘What strategy did Novak employ to defeat him?’ I mentally revisited the [2024] Olympic final. I observed the entire match when they competed. It was truly remarkable.
“I decided to adopt a similar approach, compelling him to engage with numerous balls. I am pleased with my composure during crucial moments and my courage when it counted most.”
Rune expressed, “This victory signifies everything; it was an exceptional match.”
Alcaraz and Rune are set to compete once more in the Madrid Open, scheduled from April 23 to May 4, 2025.
