Garcia Acknowledges Romero’s Victory

Ryan Garcia faced defeat against Rolly Romero upon his return from a doping suspension in a match held at New York’s well-known Times Square on Friday.

Garcia, 26, was knocked down in the second round by a left hook and was largely outmaneuvered during the welterweight contest.

Romero, 29, who was considered the underdog, was rightfully given a unanimous decision victory with scores of 115-112, 115-112, and 118-109.

Following the fight, Garcia commented that he felt good initially but was caught off guard by his opponent early in the match. He extended his congratulations to Romero for the win.

Garcia’s Statement

“He presented a formidable challenge and managed to land an early hit. I offer no excuses. Congratulations to him – his performance was commendable,” Garcia stated.

Garcia’s participation marked his first since serving a year-long suspension for testing positive for ostarine, a banned substance, after his victory over Haney in April 2024. That victory was subsequently declared a no-contest.

“The year-long absence had a significant impact on my physical and mental state,” Garcia admitted, mentioning that he intends to re-evaluate his strategy moving forward.

Furthermore, Garcia was taken into custody in June for allegedly causing approximately $15,000 worth of damage at a Beverly Hills hotel. Subsequently, he was suspended from World Boxing Council events in July due to controversial posts on social media.

He had planned an exhibition match against kickboxing champion Rukiya Anpo for New Year’s, but it was canceled because Garcia sustained a wrist injury during training.
