Viv Richards Confident in Gladiators’ PSL Comeback

LAHORE: Sir Vivian Richards, the legendary batter and mentor of Quetta Gladiators, conveyed his strong belief in the team’s capability to stage a significant recovery in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10.

The 2019 champions face a challenging situation, currently positioned fifth in the standings with only one victory in their initial matches.

The West Indies icon acknowledged that the Gladiators hadn’t yet reached their peak performance level following their consecutive defeats. However, he voiced optimism regarding their future prospects.

He also expressed his anticipation that the change in venue might bring about a positive shift in their fortunes.

“We are hopeful that the Lahore venue will favor us,” Richards stated.

“Although we suffered losses in the past two games, the Quetta Gladiators have not showcased their maximum potential. With a new location and different conditions, we’re aware we can perform better,” he added.

Richards specifically lauded the recent addition of Mark Chapman, emphasizing his notable performances for New Zealand on the international stage.

“A player of Mark Chapman’s caliber has delivered exceptional performances for New Zealand and possesses remarkable talent,” he noted, hinting at potential adjustments to enhance the team’s overall performance.

Addressing the team’s current spot in the tournament, the former batting maestro adopted a composed outlook, “Regardless of a team’s strength, losses are inevitable at times.

“We are not yet defeated. I have faith in our ability to rebound with greater strength.”

The 73-year-old cricket legend, with longstanding ties to Pakistan, expressed his fondness for the nation, referring to it as his second home.

“Pakistan is like my second home. I’ve been a regular visitor for many years, even with the West Indies team, and I consistently enjoy my time here. Wherever cricket leads me, I’ll embrace it,” Richards commented.

Viv Richards showed his support for captain Saud Shakeel amid leadership questions but disclosed that his performance will be reviewed at the end of the season.

“There is no problem with Saud Shakeel’s leadership. He is performing well currently, and we’ll assess his captaincy at the conclusion,” Richards said.

“Following a couple of losses, it is crucial to avoid losing heart. The team is maintaining a high morale – that’s all I can add.”
