Mbappe to Don Madrid’s Number 10 Jersey Previously Worn by Modric
Kylian Mbappe is slated to wear the number 10 jersey at Real Madrid next season, succeeding icon Luka Modric, who has reportedly moved to AC Milan, according to international media reports from Wednesday.
Reports indicate that Mbappe will be departing from his current No. 9, which he sported throughout his inaugural season with the Madrid team.
The No. 10 was famously worn by Madrid legend Modric, who concluded his 13-year tenure with Los Blancos at the Bernabeu.
Mbappe also wears the No. 10 for his national team, and it’s been suggested he intended to adopt the number at Madrid once available.
Had Modric prolonged his stay at Madrid for another year, Mbappe was allegedly willing to continue with the No. 9 for an additional season.
The French forward had a noteworthy initial season with Madrid after transferring from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in July 2024, amassing 44 goals across all competitions for Los Blancos.
Nevertheless, Kylian Mbappe still garnered critique from football experts as Madrid did not secure any major titles last season. They finished behind Barcelona in LaLiga, were defeated by Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals, and lost to PSG in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final.
Madrid also experienced a loss to rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on April 26.
Mbappe’s Club World Cup participation in the United States was also hampered as he was hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis, causing him to miss the group stage matches.
Although he did return during the elimination round, Xabi Alonso’s team’s campaign concluded with a significant 4-0 defeat to Mbappe’s former club.
