Kohli and Rohit Anticipated to Conclude ODI Careers Against Australia in October

MUMBAI: Virat Kohli, the former captain of India, and Rohit Sharma, the current ODI captain, are expected to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) later this year. This follows their previous departures from the Test and T20 formats, according to reports in the Indian media on Sunday.

The experienced duo, having already stepped back from both Tests (Kohli retired in May 2025) and T20 internationals (both concluded their T20I involvement after India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024), are still active in the 50-over format for India.

According to sources, the approaching ODI series against Australia, slated for October 2025, is likely to be their final appearance in this format.

Although they continue to participate in ODIs, there is growing speculation that this series could signify the end of their international careers in this particular format.

Reports indicate that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) currently does not consider Kohli and Sharma as essential components of their strategy for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

To maintain eligibility for the national ODI team beyond this series, reports suggest that both players might need to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which is India’s primary domestic one-day competition, starting in December 2025.

This requirement could potentially lead Kohli and Sharma to announce their retirement from international cricket following the series against Australia.

A source communicated to Indian media that “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not part of our plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

“With the event more than two years away and both players approaching 40 by that time, a well-defined strategy is necessary. We also need to develop young talent for the future.”
