Raducanu Enlists Rafael Nadal’s Former Coach, Francis Roig

Emma Raducanu has reportedly secured an agreement with Francis Roig, previously a coach for Rafael Nadal, in anticipation of the US Open later this month, according to various international news outlets on Tuesday.

Raducanu had previously collaborated with British coach Mark Petchey, yielding encouraging results.

International media sources indicate that Petchey could not commit to a full-time coaching role with Raducanu due to his broadcasting obligations.

Following a trial period with Roig at Wimbledon, the player and coach began their partnership at the Cincinnati Open this week, with a contract extending until the close of 2025 anticipated.

Raducanu has experienced inconsistency with coaches in recent years, though she demonstrated promising performance under the guidance of her part-time coach, Petchey.

Her achievements include a WTA 1000 quarterfinal appearance at the Miami Open in March, followed by a round-of-16 showing at the Italian Open, and a quarterfinal appearance at the inaugural women’s tournament at Queen’s Club.

Roig, a Spanish coach, is most recognized for his nearly two-decade association with Rafael Nadal. Alongside Nadal’s uncle, Toni, he contributed to the training of the 22-time Grand Slam champion for a significant portion of his career. More recently, he served as part of Matteo Berrettini’s coaching team.

While Raducanu will maintain connections with her former coach, she aims to enhance her WTA rankings through a strong performance at the Cincinnati Open in the coming weeks.

Emma Raducanu, Britain’s top female player, experienced a halt to her winning momentum last Friday, succumbing to American Amanda Anisimova at the Canadian Open.
