Rehan Aims for Ashes Spot, Trusts Selectors’ Decision

Young English leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed is focused on securing a spot in the squad for this year’s Ashes series, expressing his desire to become a complete all-rounder. He emphasized that while his bowling remains his key asset, he is committed to improving his batting consistency to contribute effectively in both areas.

The 21-year-old stated, “I still view myself as a bowler who can also bat effectively. I aspire to excel in both aspects of the game. Whether it takes years or happens quickly, I will consistently aim to be the best all-rounder I can be.”

Ahmed mentioned that his recent batting form has boosted his self-assurance, having already notched up five first-class centuries. “I believe that if I stay at the crease long enough, I will invariably find scoring opportunities. I simply needed to extend my time out there. I am surprised that I’ve maintained my focus long enough to achieve five centuries, but I am thrilled,” he added.

The emerging talent also addressed comparisons drawn with Australia’s Steve Smith, who began his career as a leg-spinning all-rounder before evolving into a world-class batter.

“I also enjoy bowling! Whenever I have represented England, it has been primarily as a bowler. I still consider that my primary skill, and I am constantly learning and improving. Leg-spin is an art that can never be truly perfected; it’s about dedicating yourself to hard work.”

“I aim to bowl as much as possible, relish the experience, and actively participate in the game. I simply want to consistently score runs and take wickets in the same matches,” he noted.

Looking forward to the Ashes, Ahmed acknowledged his excitement at the prospect of playing in Australia, while remaining grounded about his prospects.

“I have never visited or played in Australia. It seems like a fantastic place to compete, and the Ashes is an amazing event. I would be delighted to be a part of it.”

“However, I am confident that if the management selects me, they will provide their full support. If they don’t, it’s because they believe I’m not the right fit for the job there. I have complete faith in their assessment.”

“If you were to ask anyone if they wanted to play in the Ashes, they would jump at the chance. Even if I don’t go, it will still be great to watch,” he concluded.
