Twins Acquire Joey Wentz, Trade Jorge Alcala
MINNEAPOLIS: The Minnesota Twins have announced a trade involving right-handed relief pitcher Jorge Alcala, who is being sent to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league infielder Andy Lugo.
Alcala, who is 29 years old, has had difficulties this season, holding an 0-2 record and a high 8.88 ERA across 22 games played. His most recent game was Tuesday in a significant 16-4 loss against the Texas Rangers, where he allowed five runs, with four being earned.
The pitcher, hailing from the Dominican Republic, first played in MLB with the Twins in 2019 and played a vital role in the bullpen during the 2021 season. He demonstrated potential last year as well, achieving a 3.24 ERA in 54 appearances.
However, a lack of consistency has defined his performance in 2025, where he conceded three or more runs in five different games.
The Twins will receive Andy Lugo, 21, in return. He has a .265 batting average with four home runs and 20 RBIs in 44 games this season for High-A Greenville.
Lugo is known as a flexible defender, having experience at several infield and outfield positions, but has spent most of his time at first and third base in 2025.
To accommodate Alcala on their roster, the Red Sox have designated right-handed pitcher Brian Van Belle for assignment. Van Belle, added to the active roster on June 9, has not yet appeared in a major league game this season.
The Twins have added left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz to their 26-man roster to replace Alcala, as announced on Wednesday.
Wentz is anticipated to strengthen the bullpen, which has experienced issues with stability this season.
