Rays Edge White Sox in Close Contest
SAINT PETERSBURG: At Tropicana Field on Tuesday, Jose Caballero’s impressive performance, going two for three with a run and two RBIs in the second inning, propelled the Tampa Bay Rays to a narrow 4–3 victory against the Chicago White Sox.
Caballero accounted for two of Tampa Bay’s five total hits, also scoring a run during the second, which assisted the Rays in ending their two-game losing streak and evening the series to one game each.
Rookie Chandler Simpson injected dynamism into the game by stealing three bases during the victory. White Sox pitcher Davis Martin had difficulties early on, loading the bases with walks in the second inning.
Junior Caminero initiated the scoring by crossing home plate on a balk. Following this, Caballero hit a soft single to center field, allowing Jake Mangum and Matt Thaiss to score.
An error in throwing enabled Caballero to advance to third base, and he later scored on a groundout by Taylor Walls, extending the Rays’ lead to 4–0.
Chicago commenced a comeback in the fourth inning, securing two runs. Chase Meidroth drove in a run with a single for an RBI, and Edgar Quero contributed a sacrifice fly.
Colson Montgomery reduced the deficit further in the seventh with his first-ever major league home run, a solo shot that pulled the White Sox within a single run.
Tampa Bay’s bullpen was effective, with Edwin Uceta (7–2) being credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings and achieving four strikeouts. Closer Pete Fairbanks recorded his 17th save by pitching a flawless ninth inning.
The Rays played without All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe, who was placed on the 10-day injured list due to ankle tendinitis.
The game’s starting time was advanced in anticipation of expected severe weather later in the evening. Taj Bradley is scheduled to pitch for the Rays on Wednesday in their last home matchup of July. Jonathan Cannon is slated to start for the White Sox.
