Shastri Critiques Handling of Kohli’s Test Retirement

Ravi Shastri, former Indian coach and cricketer, has shared his views on Virat Kohli’s departure from Test cricket, suggesting the situation could have been managed with greater care. He voiced his disappointment that Kohli did not receive a more fitting farewell.

Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket was announced last month, marking the end of a remarkable journey that included 123 matches, 9,230 runs, and an average of 46.85, along with 30 centuries.

Shastri, who closely collaborated with Kohli during his tenure as India’s head coach in 2022, particularly during Kohli’s captaincy, expressed his sadness over the manner of Kohli’s exit from the game’s longest format.

“It’s often when someone departs that their true significance is recognised. I’m saddened by his departure and how it occurred. Better communication could have improved the situation,” Shastri told the Indian media.

He also mentioned that, following India’s 1-3 Test series loss to Australia earlier in the year, he would have considered reinstating Kohli as the team’s captain.

“If it were up to me, I would have immediately appointed him as captain after the Australia series,” Shastri commented.

Shastri lauded Kohli’s impact on Test cricket, emphasizing his consistent performance and leadership abilities. Kohli concluded his career with an average of 46.85, though it had previously peaked around 52.

Kohli’s retirement announcement preceded the naming of India’s squad for the five-match Test series against England, scheduled to commence on June 20.

Following Kohli’s retirement and reports of Rohit Sharma’s potential exit from the format, selectors have named Shubman Gill as captain for the series against England.
