Nadal Reflects on Career After Laureus Award

MADRID: Tennis icon Rafael Nadal has openly discussed his feelings about life after his retirement from professional tennis. He stated that he does not long for the sport that propelled him to global recognition and secured him 22 Grand Slam titles, including an unprecedented 14 French Open victories.

Nadal, aged 38, officially concluded his career following his final Davis Cup match in November 2024. His career was distinguished but also marked by persistent injuries.

Speaking with journalists after being honored at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards, Nadal conveyed his current sentiments: “The reality is that I have no longing for tennis. Absolutely none. It’s not because I grew weary of it or was in conflict with it. I concluded my career content, and I would have continued if my physical condition had allowed, because I cherished what I was doing.”

“It was my deep-seated passion, and it has been throughout my entire life. However, upon recognizing your physical limitations, you endeavor to conclude that chapter, and I have done so.”

Throughout his career, Nadal faced numerous physical setbacks but postponed his retirement for as long as feasible.

Looking to the future, the Spanish star did not dismiss the idea of assuming a role within the sport, potentially as a captain or leader for the national team. However, he emphasized that he currently has no concrete plans.

“It’s unpredictable,” Nadal commented when questioned about the possibility of leading Spain’s Davis Cup team. “My passion for the sport remains, but one must forge their individual path.”

“My recent journey was extensive, and now I must prepare for what lies ahead. My family and team have assisted me in anticipating the future, though its course remains uncertain.”

“Naturally, I could be a candidate for captaincy, but the present circumstances are not conducive. I am not rejecting the possibility, but I am focusing more on the coming years.”
