Raducanu Acknowledges Movement Challenges on Clay Courts
Britain’s Emma Raducanu conceded Friday that she needs to refine her clay-court movement despite being uncertain about the specific methods for enhancement.
Raducanu, following her exit from the Madrid Open after a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 loss to Marta Kostyuk, the 24th seed, expressed her current uncertainty regarding potential improvements.
Despite demonstrating moments of brilliance, Raducanu’s limited experience on clay, marked by only a few matches in recent seasons, was apparent against the more seasoned Ukrainian player.
“I view it positively that I managed to progress and participate in two matches on outdoor clay courts,” she commented.
“I would say it’s quite clear to me that I don’t necessarily feel entirely at ease, but I believe this is an aspect I can develop and concentrate on.
“Furthermore, this is only my second full clay season and my first in three years. Therefore, I am aiming to give myself opportunities to play as many points as possible on this surface, and also dedicate time to training on the court.”
A crucial element for success on clay courts is effective movement, particularly sliding. The 2021 US Open champion admitted she is still mastering this technique.
“I found that moving was really tough,” Emma Raducanu stated.
“I felt as though I was slipping frequently, and it took me a considerable amount of time to exit the corners, as well as after serving. I am unsure how to address this issue, so I intend to revisit it and dedicate the upcoming week to improvement.”
