Pujara: White-Ball Performance Enhances Test Selection Chances
Cheteshwar Pujara, the former Indian batter, advised young cricketers on Tuesday to concentrate on performing effectively across all formats. He emphasized that doing well in white-ball cricket frequently creates opportunities to join India’s Test squads.
Pujara spoke to the Indian media and underscored the significance of adjusting to the changing cricket environment.
“I would not suggest any young players focus solely on the Test format because things are changing. The white-ball game is extremely popular, and one must adapt to future developments,”
Pujara referred to white-ball cricket as the way of the future but stressed that Test cricket is here to stay.
“White-ball cricket, along with Test matches, is unquestionably the future. Test cricket will endure; it is not disappearing. However, in order for a young player to be selected for Tests, they must perform well in the IPL or in India’s T20I and ODI squads.
Pujara stated, “If you aren’t a competent white-ball player, your chances of making the Test team are quite slim.”
He observed that outstanding performances in domestic red-ball competitions like the Ranji or Duleep Trophy can result in a Test call-up, but these instances are uncommon.
“The white-ball formats offer a simpler path. A young player should, in my opinion, aspire to play all three formats. I passed up the others, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to make that decision.
He told young people that they may be able to play in any format if they play Test cricket.
“They should continue to strive to play Test cricket because it is the best format. If you want to be known as the greatest cricketer and earn respect, you must not only play but also excel in red-ball cricket,” he continued.
Pujara reflected on his own career and acknowledged that giving Test cricket priority meant having fewer chances in the IPL and other white-ball formats.
“I had to give up something in white-ball cricket in order to succeed in Tests, and I was happy to do it. I did miss out on contracts since I was labeled as a Test player.
He stated, “When you represent your country and miss out on other opportunities, you need to be prepared for that.”
Despite the compromises, the 37-year-old emphasized that he is content.
“I would have undoubtedly seized the chance to play all three formats or to be a regular in the IPL if I had had it. But I had to make a decision, and for me, it was Test cricket. I’m happy I chose it, and I’m quite happy with how my career has gone,” Pujara said in closing.
