Providence College has officially named Bryan Hodgson as its new men’s basketball head coach, announced Sunday by Athletic Director Steve Napolitan. Hodgson arrives from the University of South Florida, where he spent one successful season leading the Bulls. The athletic department expressed confidence that Hodgson’s track record and energetic approach will revitalize the Friars’ program and return them to championship contention. Napolitan specifically cited Hodgson’s experience in reviving two Division I programs as a key factor in the decision.

During his single season at USF, Hodgson guided the Bulls to an impressive 25-9 overall record. This successful campaign culminated in them winning both the American Conference regular-season and postseason championships. The team also earned a bid to the NCAA tournament, ultimately falling in the first round to Louisville. Hodgson’s ability to quickly elevate a program was further demonstrated by his 70 wins over the last three years, utilizing analytics, strong recruiting, and effective coaching. He brings 18 years of collegiate coaching experience, including a stint as an assistant at Alabama.

Hodgson, 38, is known for implementing an up-tempo style of play that emphasizes high-efficiency shot selection. This offensive approach was honed during his time as an assistant coach under Nate Oats at Buffalo and Alabama. He replaces Kim English, who coached the Friars for three seasons with an 82-81 overall record, including consecutive losing seasons. The move marks Hodgson’s third collegiate head coaching position in as many years, following his tenure at South Florida and two seasons at Arkansas State.

At Arkansas State, Hodgson also achieved significant success, leading the Red Wolves to two 20-win seasons. His time there included a Sun Belt regular-season title in 2024-25, which secured the program’s first NIT appearance in over three decades. Providence College operates within the well-funded Big East conference and is eager to recapture its former winning tradition. The program has struggled recently, with only one 20-win season since Ed Cooley’s departure for Georgetown in 2023.

Providence College’s basketball program has experienced a downturn in recent years, particularly within the Big East. Over the last two seasons, the team has posted a challenging 13-27 record in conference play. Hodgson’s arrival signals a clear intention by the athletic department to reverse this trend. His mandate is to instill toughness, discipline, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, reflecting the proud tradition and passionate fanbase of the Friars. Fans are hopeful that his proven ability to build winning cultures will translate to success in the competitive Big East.
