Martinez Hails Ronaldo as Portugal’s Greatest Ever
Portugal’s national team coach, Roberto Martinez, has affirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo rightfully earns his place in the squad, citing his unparalleled experience even at the age of 40.
Portugal secured their second Nations League title, triumphing over Spain in a penalty shootout with a score of 5-3, following an electrifying 2-2 draw in the final. This victory marked Ronaldo’s third title with the Portuguese national team.
The Al-Nassr striker solidified his record by netting his 138th international goal during the final match, which ultimately led to the penalty shootout.
Amidst criticism aimed at Ronaldo’s age from both fans and analysts, coach Martinez defended his selection, emphasizing the ‘unique experience’ Ronaldo brings to the team.
“At 40 years old, his experience in club football is unmatched. As a coach, the objective isn’t simply to pick or not pick Cristiano Ronaldo, but to strategically utilize the best players to build the strongest team and achieve victory. Decisions must be grounded in facts, and Cristiano has impressively scored 20 goals in his last 25 appearances for Portugal,” Martinez stated.
“Such records are unparalleled. We have cultivated a highly competitive environment within the dressing room, and having a player like Ronaldo provides invaluable lessons every day,” he added.
Ronaldo’s career boasts over 900 goals. Furthermore, he currently leads the Saudi Pro League with 25 goals this season for Al-Nassr.
Martinez lauded Ronaldo’s exceptional footballing prowess, recognizing him as the finest player Portugal has ever produced and a highly influential figure in the sport.
“He is an integral part of the national team and must maintain the highest standards. It’s crucial to understand the various stages of a footballer’s career. Initially, he was known for his dribbling skills and decisive final moves. Now, he is a player who has shaped history,” Martinez remarked.
“He stands as the best player in Portugal’s history and undoubtedly ranks among the most influential figures in the game. He transcends being just a player; he is an icon.
“His dedication to constant improvement is infectious, influencing the younger players. He seizes every opportunity to elevate his game. His drive for self-improvement has a contagious effect, inspiring the younger generation.”
