Pirates Defeat Blue Jays as Evan Sisk Records First MLB Victory
PITTSBURGH: In a game marked by defensive miscues from Toronto, the Pittsburgh Pirates triumphed over the Blue Jays with a 5-2 victory at PNC Park on Monday. Henry Davis initiated the pivotal seventh inning with a double and ultimately scored the go-ahead run.
Davis advanced to third due to a sacrifice bunt executed by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. He then capitalized on a wild pitch delivered by Brendon Little, who had entered the game replacing Yariel Rodriguez (2-1). This victory brought an end to the Pirates’ two-game losing streak, improving upon their recent performance where they had lost seven of nine games.
Spencer Horwitz managed two hits, while both Alexander Canario and Bryan Reynolds contributed with one RBI each. Later, Davis added a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, extending Pittsburgh’s advantage following a pair of errors from Toronto that prolonged the inning.
Jared Triolo earned a walk and subsequently scored after an inaccurate throw by pitcher Seranthony Dominguez. A wild throw into center field from catcher Tyler Heineman further allowed Canario to advance, eventually scoring as well.
The Pirates’ offense provided support for Paul Skenes, who recorded eight strikeouts and conceded two runs across six innings; however, he was not involved in the decision. Rookie Evan Sisk (1-1) secured his first career win, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. David Bednar closed out the game, earning the save.
For Toronto, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each posted an RBI. Guerrero, however, left the game in the fifth inning due to tightness in his left hamstring after an awkward stretch at first base.
Manager John Schneider was ejected from the game in the sixth inning. Tensions escalated in the seventh when the benches briefly cleared after a verbal altercation between Tommy Pham and Heineman, although no physical confrontation took place.
The series is set to continue on Tuesday, with Toronto’s Max Scherzer aiming for his 220th career win as he faces Pittsburgh’s Mitch Keller.
