Schwarber’s Two Homers Propel Phillies to Victory Over Nationals
WASHINGTON: In Friday’s MLB matchup at Nationals Park, Kyle Schwarber’s impressive performance, highlighted by two home runs, powered the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. Schwarber’s initial homer marked his 43rd of the season, followed by a crucial three-run blast in the seventh inning.
Schwarber also demonstrated patience at the plate, drawing two walks during the game. Bryce Harper contributed significantly, launching his 19th home run of the year, a solo shot to center field, which punctuated a four-run inning solidifying the Phillies’ lead.
Harper’s performance included two RBIs, two hits, and one run scored. Earlier in the game, Trea Turner singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and ultimately scored on an RBI hit by Harper.
Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler pitched five innings, conceding two runs, including a solo home run to Daylen Lile in the fourth. Reliever Tanner Banks (4-2) secured the win, with strong support from Orion Kerkering, Matt Strahm, and David Robertson, who collectively closed out the final innings.
A moment of concern arose for Philadelphia in the ninth inning when reliever Jhoan Duran, recently acquired, was struck on the right leg by a line drive, necessitating his removal from the game via cart.
A notable play occurred in the fifth inning when Washington’s catcher, Riley Adams, weighing 263 pounds, surprised Wheeler by stealing his first base of the season after a leadoff walk. Wheeler quickly regained composure, retiring the subsequent three batters to maintain the tied score.
Nationals starter Clayton Beeter (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in a brief one-third of an inning. CJ Abrams and Lile were responsible for driving in the only runs for Washington.
The series is set to continue, with Phillies veteran right-hander Taijuan Walker scheduled to pitch against Nationals righty Cade Cavalli, who will be making his third start of the season.
