Akmal Believes Consistent Opportunities for Youngsters Will Aid Pakistan in T20 World Cup Preparation

KARACHI: Former wicketkeeper batter Kamran Akmal commended the emerging players for the noticeable change in Pakistan’s approach during their recent T20I series against Bangladesh.

Following a 4-1 defeat in New Zealand in March, the Pakistani team demonstrated a remarkable recovery under the guidance of new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, securing victories in all three matches against the Tigers.

The team scored 201 runs in each of the initial two T20Is. In the final match, they chased down a target of 197 with three wickets remaining and 16 balls to spare, completing a clean sweep.

Mohammad Haris, Hasan Nawaz, and Sahibzada Farhan were prominent figures in Pakistan’s batting lineup during the series.

Reflecting on the team’s first series win at home since December 2021, Akmal praised the young players for their clear approach and adherence to modern cricket principles.

He added that while Pakistan cricket previously lacked intent, the inclusion of these young players has instilled a more fearless approach to the shortest format of the game.

“They exhibited clarity and played according to the demands of contemporary cricket. There was a deficiency of intent in Pakistan cricket, which the new players have addressed with their bold approach,” Akmal stated.

The former wicketkeeper emphasized that the current group of players should receive ample opportunities to enhance Pakistan’s readiness for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year.

“We have this year to nurture our players and provide them with valuable experience,” Akmal noted.

Kamran Akmal specifically lauded captain Salman Ali Agha for his courageous choice to pursue the target in the final T20I.

“Pakistan won the toss and chose to bowl first. Subsequently, they chased down 197 with such composure and ease, which is a significant achievement,” he concluded.
