Hockey Players Decry Proposed Allowance as Insulting
LAHORE: Pakistan’s hockey team members voiced profound discontent on Thursday regarding the suggested daily compensation of 400 rupees, deeming it disrespectful to their commitment and efforts for the sport.
The players expressed their dismay, noting that the sum is significantly less than the daily earnings of a common laborer.
“Offering 400 rupees daily is akin to adding insult to injury,” a seasoned player commented.
“It’s demeaning. What could be more disrespectful? We lack consistent employment, and the allowance is frequently late. Now, they mention providing only 400 rupees.”
The athletes also mentioned that numerous players are grappling with serious economic challenges, with their families finding it hard to manage basic living costs.
“Our nation has provided us with opportunities, and we participate with patriotic fervor. However, learning about this meager allowance is disheartening. Should these circumstances persist, we might be forced to abandon hockey entirely,” one player stated.
According to the players, the absence of adequate economic assistance is disheartening and represents a grave risk to the advancement of hockey in Pakistan.
On the other hand, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Secretary Rana Mujahid clarified that the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) mandated the daily allowance of 400 rupees.
“The federation already gives players a daily allowance of 100 dollars. If players are not content with 100 dollars, how can they play for 400 rupees? This directive from the PSB lacks feasibility,” Rana Mujahid stated.
