Pacers Seize Series Lead with Victory Over Thunder
INDIANAPOLIS: The Indiana Pacers took a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-107, thanks to a strong performance by their bench on Wednesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Bennedict Mathurin spearheaded the effort with 27 points, four rebounds, and one assist. His point total was the highest for a reserve player in an NBA Finals matchup since Jason Terry in 2011. T.J. McConnell contributed significant energy with crucial plays at both ends, as Indiana’s bench totaled 49 points, energizing the home fans.
Tyrese Haliburton came close to a triple-double, recording 22 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds. Pascal Siakam also added 21 points in the well-rounded offensive display.
Pacers coach Rick Carlisle lauded the team’s solidarity and depth, underscoring the significance of their collective contribution.
Carlisle’s quote:
“This reflects our team’s nature. We need everyone prepared. The same players won’t always lead in scoring, but we must function as a unit.”
Jalen Williams topped the Thunder’s scoring with 26 points, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander posted 24 points and eight rebounds.
Chet Holmgren achieved a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds but struggled with his long-range shooting, missing all six three-point attempts.
Despite leading after three quarters, the Thunder couldn’t withstand the Pacers’ fourth-quarter push.
Aaron Nesmith made a critical three-pointer, Siakam scored a late basket, and Myles Turner secured the win with consecutive blocks on Holmgren.
Game Four is scheduled for Friday at the same venue, where the Thunder will aim to rebound and tie the series.
