O’Sullivan Achieves Rare Feat with Two Maximum Breaks in a Single Match
Ronnie O’Sullivan showcased an extraordinary display of skill at the Saudi Arabia Masters semi-final, securing a 6-3 victory against Chris Wakelin on Friday. This win makes him the most senior player to advance to the final in the tournament’s history.
The seven-time world champion, aged 49, captivated the audience in Jeddah with exceptional cue-ball precision, achieving his 16th career 147 break in the initial frame, marking his first perfect score since 2018.
In an astonishing turn, O’Sullivan replicated the feat during the seventh frame, prompting a standing ovation from spectators and accolades from Wakelin, who lauded him on social media as ‘the greatest player ever.’
Reflecting on his exceptional performance, O’Sullivan remarked that it was the finest he had ever played in any match.
“I’ve truly never performed at such a high level in a match,” O’Sullivan stated. He elaborated that his triumph stemmed from refined technique, sharp concentration, and unwavering determination.
“Success demands excellent play, precise cueing, mental fortitude, and sustained focus. I felt this acutely against Kyren Wilson in the quarter-finals, necessitating intense concentration. I aimed to maintain that mindset for tonight’s match,” he clarified.
O’Sullivan now shares the distinction of being only the second player to record two maximum breaks in a single match, a milestone previously reached by Jackson Page during the World Championship qualifiers earlier this year. His record now stands at 17 maximums, surpassing John Higgins by four.
The Englishman demonstrated exceptional form, delivering additional breaks of 142, 70, 67, and 134. He effectively countered Wakelin’s 125 break, confirming his spot in Saturday’s final against Neil Robertson.
Alongside his final appearance, O’Sullivan is set to receive a bonus of £147,000, to be shared with Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, for their maximum breaks in significant snooker events.
Earlier in the day, Robertson edged out Elliot Slessor with a 6-3 victory in the other semi-final, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown with ‘The Rocket’ for the Saudi title.
