Djokovic Advances to Quarterfinals After Overcoming Munar 6-3, 5-7, 6-2
Novak Djokovic’s struggles at the Shanghai Masters continued as he vomited for the second consecutive day during his round of 16 victory over Jaume Munar on Tuesday. Despite the challenges, the Serbian tennis player clinched the win with scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
The Shanghai Masters has garnered attention due to the fast court conditions and intensely hot weather.
During his second-round triumph against Yannick Hanfmann, Djokovic experienced vomiting mid-match, visibly affected by the sweltering heat.
Reflecting on the difficult conditions, the tennis star described them as brutal, noting the extreme difficulty of playing in such heat at his age.
“It’s the same for everyone on the court, but it’s undoubtedly brutal with over 80 percent humidity daily,” Djokovic commented. “When playing during the day with the sun, it becomes even more challenging. You simply have to cope. Biologically, it presents a greater challenge for me.”
The Grand Slam champion secured the first set 6-3 against Munar. Subsequently, Djokovic sustained an ankle injury, prompting a medical timeout.
The hot Shanghai weather seemed to further affect the player, as he vomited again on the court, leading to a temporary pause in play while he cleaned himself.
The second set, lasting 74 minutes, went in favor of Munar. However, the Serbian athlete rallied in the final set, establishing an early 2-0 lead to secure the match.
