Norris Secures Austrian Grand Prix Victory in McLaren One-Two Finish
SPIELBERG: Lando Norris emerged victorious at the Austrian Grand Prix, leading a McLaren one-two triumph on Sunday. He masterfully fended off teammate Oscar Piastri, who is also the current championship leader.
Norris successfully held off Piastri in a captivating 20-lap skirmish during the race’s initial stages. He later demonstrated composure under intense pressure to clinch his third triumph this season.
The Briton’s win narrows Australian Piastri’s lead in the championship standings from 22 to 15 points with 13 races remaining, intensifying the rivalry between the two McLaren racers.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secured third place, followed by teammate Lewis Hamilton in fourth, and George Russell of Mercedes finishing fifth.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull, the defending champion, experienced his first race retirement of the year after a collision on the opening lap involving Mercedes’ rookie driver, Kimi Antonelli of Italy.
Verstappen, currently third in the driver standings, now trails Piastri by 61 points.
“Difficult, hot, and exhausting. It was very stressful but also very enjoyable. A good battle, congratulations to Oscar,” Norris commented after exiting his car at the finish line.
“Hopefully it was entertaining for the viewers, but it was challenging inside the car, especially when he was within the DRS (drag reduction range),” he added.
Piastri, who initially overtook Leclerc for second place after a prematurely halted first start, recorded the fastest lap of the race.
He briefly took the lead on lap 11 during a fierce contest, but Norris swiftly reclaimed it in a battle reminiscent of their near-collision at the previous race in Canada.
Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson achieved a career-best sixth-place finish, while Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin secured seventh – finishing ahead of Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, the Brazilian rookie he manages.
Bortoleto earned his first F1 points, with his teammate Nico Hulkenberg also securing a ninth-place finish.
Esteban Ocon claimed the final point for Haas.
McLaren now leads Ferrari by 207 points in the constructors’ championship. Ferrari moved back into second position, with Mercedes trailing by a single point.
