Jokic Postpones Extension Talks, Nuggets Make Roster Moves
Reports emerged Tuesday that Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic has chosen to delay discussions regarding a contract extension until the 2026 offseason.
Jokic, the centerpiece of the Nuggets’ roster, inked a five-year, $276 million contract back in 2022, leaving him with three seasons still to play under the existing agreement. The final year, covering the 2027-28 season, features a player option valued at $62.8 million.
The reigning NBA MVP is currently eligible to agree to a three-year, $200 million extension before the October 20 deadline.
However, postponing negotiations to next year would open the door for a four-year extension, potentially increasing his earnings by an additional $77 million.
Nuggets president Josh Kroenke has publicly stated the organization’s intention to present Jokic with an extension, but he conceded that the ultimate decision lies with the star center.
“We’re absolutely going to offer it,” Kroenke stated. “I’m unsure whether he’ll accept it, as we plan to thoroughly explain all financial implications related to signing now versus later. We believe in complete transparency, and he will then make the best decision for himself and his family, which we will fully support.”
To sustain their championship aspirations and continue building around Jokic, the Nuggets have implemented strategic changes within the organization.
In terms of personnel moves, Denver has welcomed back Bruce Brown, a member of their 2023 championship team, and secured the services of experienced shooter Tim Hardaway Jr.
