The Next Generation: Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid Predict Future Cricket Stars

Moeen Ali, the former England all-rounder, and Adil Rashid, a leg-spinner, have shared their choices for the next group of elite cricketers, following in the footsteps of the original ‘Fab Four.’ Both cricketers included Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal from India in their selections.

The term ‘Fab Four’ was initially used by the late Martin Crowe of New Zealand in 2014 to identify Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson as the premier batsmen of the modern game.

For almost ten years, this distinguished quartet was a dominant force in international cricket, forming the core of their respective national teams. As these legends approach the end of their careers, attention has turned to identifying the players who might take their place.

During an appearance on Beard Before Wicket, Moeen and Rashid revealed their choices, emphasizing talent, temperament, and potential for long-term success in addition to current form.

Both analysts agreed on the inclusion of Harry Brook from England, alongside the Indian stars Gill and Jaiswal.

Moeen Ali’s Insights

Moeen Ali lauded Shubman Gill, the Indian opening batsman, for his elegant style and composure at the crease.

“Shubman Gill impresses with his batting style and the apparent ease with which he plays. His technique has noticeably improved during the series in England. He is a top-tier player, very stylish and elegant,” Moeen stated.

He further added, “There are specific qualities you look for in a batter, certain shots or aspects that stand out. He possesses those qualities, which are rare. Currently, he appears to be in complete command while batting.”

Adil Rashid’s Perspective

Rashid expressed confidence in Jacob Bethell, the 21-year-old English all-rounder, anticipating a strong comeback from him despite previous injury setbacks.

“Brook, Gill, Jaiswal… I would also include Bethell. I believe he will be a prominent figure in the next five to six years,” Rashid commented.

Moeen’s fourth pick was Rachin Ravindra from New Zealand, who made a significant impact during the 2023 ODI World Cup and has already accumulated over 1,200 Test runs.

Moeen highlighted Ravindra’s adaptability, noting, “He possesses the necessary technique and determination to excel in all conditions.”

Moeen also spoke positively about Jacob Bethell’s inherent talent, even though he has not yet achieved a century in professional cricket.

“Many are aware that Bethell has not scored a century in professional cricket, but his batting style is noteworthy. His primary challenge will be overcoming injuries, as he is prone to them,” Moeen explained.

He concluded, “He is an exceptionally gifted and naturally talented player, displaying both power and sound technique. So, with Brook, Gill, and Jaiswal already mentioned, I am adding Ravindra and Bethell to round out the top five.”
