Netherlands Stuns Scotland with Record Chase
In a captivating ICC World Cup League 2 match held in Dundee, the Netherlands achieved the third-highest successful chase in ODI history, eclipsing Scotland. Max O’Dowd’s magnificent, undefeated 158 overshadowed George Munsey’s remarkable 191.
Scotland, having won the toss and opting to bat, amassed an imposing 369 for 6. This was largely due to Munsey’s explosive innings, scoring 191 runs off 150 balls. This feat marks the highest individual score by an Associate batter in ODIs, surpassing Paul Stirling’s previous record of 177 against Canada back in 2010.
Munsey, who appeared set for a double century, was dismissed with just 10 balls remaining. He forged a rapid 150-run partnership with skipper Matthew Cross, who contributed a swift 59 off 49 deliveries.
The Netherlands initiated their chase strongly, with O’Dowd and Michael Levitt combining for 67 runs in 9.2 overs. However, Safyaan Sharif’s quick double strike, dismissing Levitt and Zach Lion-Cachet, left the Dutch at 75 for 2.
O’Dowd then joined forces with captain Scott Edwards, steering the innings and progressing the score to 143 in 21 overs.
Following the departures of Edwards and Wesley Barresi, O’Dowd discovered staunch support in Teja Nidamanuru. Together, they contributed 101 runs from 91 balls, maintaining a manageable run rate.
With 91 runs required from the final 10 overs and six wickets in hand, the Netherlands seemed in control. However, they then lost Nidamanuru on the subsequent ball.
Noah Croes then delivered a stunning 50 off a mere 29 balls, dashing Scotland’s hopes. Despite his dismissal in the 48th over, the Netherlands required only 15 runs at a run-a-ball.
Fittingly, O’Dowd secured the victory with a massive six, completing the chase with four balls to spare and four wickets in hand.
