Salah Crowned FWA Footballer of the Year
Liverpool’s dynamic forward, Mohamed Salah, has been honored as the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year, acknowledging his exceptional performance this season, which includes an impressive 33 goals and 23 assists across all competitions.
The Egyptian superstar now stands as only the second player, following Arsenal’s legendary Thierry Henry, to secure this esteemed accolade three times.
According to the FWA, Salah garnered an overwhelming 90 percent of the votes, marking the largest victory margin recorded in this century.
Salah’s remarkable displays have been crucial in Liverpool’s pursuit of their second Premier League title in the last five years.
The 32-year-old, having recently committed to Liverpool with a two-year contract extension, is also in the running for a fourth Premier League Golden Boot.
He is on the cusp of matching the record for the most goal involvements within a single Premier League campaign, needing just one more goal or assist.
With a current total of 46 goal contributions, Salah trails only Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, the joint record-holders who each attained 47 goal involvements during a 42-game season.
Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, secured the second spot in the FWA voting, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Declan Rice claiming third and fourth positions, respectively.
Salah initially received the FWA Footballer of the Year award in the 2017–18 season upon joining Liverpool and reclaimed it in the 2021–22 season.
He is also a leading contender for both the Premier League Player of the Season and the Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Past recipients of the award include prominent footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo, a multiple-time winner, and Jordan Henderson. Thierry Henry famously won it in four successive seasons from 2002–03 to 2005–06.
