Giolito to Pitch for Boston on Tuesday
MINNEAPOLIS: A timely two-run single by Brooks Lee in the ninth inning secured a thrilling 5-4 victory for the Minnesota Twins against the Boston Red Sox on Monday at Target Field.
The game faced a temporary suspension because of intense thunderstorms just before the ninth inning began. Following an almost hour-long stoppage, the Twins came back with determination, demonstrating resilience and opportune hitting.
DaShawn Keirsey Jr. started the ninth with a base hit, and Boston’s pitcher Jordan Hicks (1-7) then hit consecutive batters, filling the bases. The Red Sox briefly stopped the rally with a force out, but Lee’s single to left field sealed the win for Minnesota.
Keirsey, making a significant impact in his debut, went 2-for-4 and hit a two-run home run in the third inning, marking his first in the major league.
Christian Vázquez contributed a sacrifice fly in the sixth, tying the score at 3-3, allowing Royce Lewis to score, who had two hits during the night.
Boston briefly took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth when pinch-runner David Hamilton stole second and third base, eventually scoring on an RBI single by Roman Anthony.
Earlier in the game, Alex Bregman energized Boston with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, his 14th of the season.
Despite giving up a run in the ninth, Twins pitcher Jhoan Duran (6-4) secured the win. Hicks suffered the loss after conceding two runs in just a third of an inning.
Looking ahead, Lucas Giolito is slated to pitch for the Red Sox on Tuesday. Minnesota had initially planned for Chris Paddack to start but will now opt for a bullpen approach.
The victory brought an end to the Twins’ two-game losing sequence.
