Soto’s Double Propels Mets to Victory Over Dodgers
NEW YORK: In a Major League Baseball (MLB) showdown at Citi Field on Saturday, Juan Soto’s pivotal two-run double propelled the New York Mets to a 5-2 triumph against the Los Angeles Dodgers. This marked Soto’s first extra-base hit since May 9.
Soto’s double, with the bases loaded, broke a 2-2 deadlock in the fourth inning, highlighting a three-run surge for the Mets.
The hit concluded a period of struggle for Soto, who had not achieved an extra-base hit since his home run against the Chicago Cubs last month.
David Peterson delivered an outstanding performance on the mound for the Mets, securing the win with a career-best outing. He pitched 7 2/3 innings, conceding two runs on five hits, issuing two walks, and recording seven strikeouts, including three against Shohei Ohtani.
This outing was Peterson’s first time pitching into the eighth inning this season, and his first since September 15 of the previous year against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Dodgers initially took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, with an RBI single from Enrique Hernandez, followed by an RBI groundout from Dalton Rushing. However, the Mets quickly countered.
Brett Baty initiated the scoring for the Mets with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. Starling Marte then contributed an infield RBI single in the fourth, setting the stage for Soto’s crucial double.
Baty extended the lead with an RBI double in the eighth inning and concluded the game with a 3-for-3 performance.
Closer Edwin Díaz struck out Mookie Betts, who represented the tying run, in the eighth inning, before closing out the victory with a flawless ninth inning.
Andy Pages recorded two hits for the Dodgers, while starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.
