Medvedev Hit with $42,500 in Fines by US Tennis Association
NEW YORK: Daniil Medvedev, a former US Open champion, received fines totaling $42,500 on Wednesday following his conduct during a first-round loss to Benjamin Bonzi earlier in the week.
Bonzi of France defeated Medvedev 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4 in a US Open match on Sunday.
The United States Tennis Association issued the fines to the Russian player.
The disruption, caused by a photographer, led to a pause in the match for around six minutes after Bonzi missed a first serve on match point at 5-4 in the third set.
Chair umpire Greg Allensworth’s decision to give Bonzi a first serve instead of a second prompted Medvedev’s outburst at the official, which excited the crowd and prevented Bonzi from serving.
Medvedev commented into a camera regarding Allensworth: “He is ready to be home, guys. He does not want to be here. He is being paid for the match, not for the hours.”
The world number 13 also destroyed his racket after the match concluded.
Medvedev earned $110,000 in tournament prize money for participating in the first round. The US Open stated in a document listing on-site violations that $30,000 would be deducted from his earnings for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for breaking his racket.
Following the episode, Daniil Medvedev acknowledged he anticipated a significant fine.
“I’m receiving a large enough fine, so if I comment, I’ll be in more trouble, so I won’t,” he stated.
